With new hardware, software, and services optimized for AI and high performance computing (HPC), HPE wants to make it faster and easier for businesses and scientific organizations to use data-based insights to drive innovation.
On Monday, HPE announced a host of new hardware, including joint projects with SGI and Biovista, along with a new compute experience. In addition to performance and efficiency, the new products are meant to address growing enterprise concerns for security, agility, and cost, HPE’s head of HPC and AI solutions Bill Mannel said in a press release.
The new HPE SGI 8600 System marks the first public effort between both brands since HPE acquired SGI in August 2016. The petascale system is liquid-cooled and based on SGI’s ICE XA architecture, the release said. The system can scale to more than 10,000 nodes with no additional switches, and provides the fastest parallel processing performance in the industry, according to the companies. It’s optimized for engineering workloads and “national security challenges,” the release noted.

In HPE’s Apollo line, the firm announced a new system, and updated its Apollo 10 series as well. The HPE Apollo 6000 Gen10 System is the “most secure HPC system in the world,” the release said, and it has been re-tooled to be able to provide more than 300 teraflops per rack. It also offers more efficiency for licensing, higher IOPs performance, and more.
HPE’s Apollo 10 series will now be offering new entry-level systems for deep learning and AI. The HPE Apollo sx40 System and the HPE Apollo pc40 System are both Intel Xeon Gen10 servers, with support for different kinds of GPUs.
Additionally, to improve efforts in digital medicine, HPE will be collaborating with Biovista on its Big Data AI engine, Project Prodigy, to help improve data-centric healthcare efforts.
According to the release, HPE is also release a new compute experience to go along with its HPC and AI initiatives. The new experience brings boosted firmware security, performance software from HPE, cluster management, and additional service enhancements that will make it simpler for businesses to derive value from their AI tools. It’s also meant to enhance security.
“HPE’s new compute experience is designed to enhance security by reducing vulnerabilities to denial of service and malware attacks while providing more flexible, on-demand infrastructure consumption options for HPC deployments,” Steve Conway, senior vice president of research at Hyperion Research, said in the release.
